Lost in One Man’s Loss

‘Another 13 Killed in Plateau’, ‘Violence: Soldiers, Police take over Onitsha Motor Park’, ‘20,000Jostle for Employment forms in Ebonyi’, ‘Arowolo Sentenced to Death For Killing Banker Wife’, were some of the headlines that made the news yesterday but weren’t important enough to stir up needed emotions inside of us because we were so engrossed in one man’s loss.

Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was suspended and replaced, so sad but, so what? Of course for a while I did reason his circumstance, even wrote about it but why should anyone brood over the matter when there are more important issues bordering on more Nigerians and with dire consequences to their existence than Sanusi’s?

Indeed Nigeria is a society of misplaced priority; where people don’t know what or who is important. We decry corruption but worship corrupt politicians because they have money. One man’s problem becomes national discourse because he’s a ‘big man’, yet daily, many people die all around us. Are we saying Sanusi is more important than hundreds of Nigerians?

Bye Bye Big Daddy

You don’t need to be clairvoyant to know that suspended Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is not coming back. The suspension was the other option the presidency had, since he wouldn’t resign.

Sanusi was supposed to go, but not for the reason the presidency suspended him – his big mouth. Unlike the presidency, Nigerians liked that he could talk and ask questions but, what they didn’t like was how he doled out billions of the CBN money to organisations, especially in the North, as if they were his private money. More than an Economist, Sanusi was a Politician.

His intelligence and oratory would be missed. Some would even miss his fat wallet when theirs run dry but, all in all, the polity would be better without him. The next CBN Governor should focus on being an Economist.

Let’s Pray for Peace

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan seems to have the perfect peace strategy in ending terrorism in the country - The more we pray, the better our chances at eliminating Boko Haram members. Isn’t that impressive?

The issue of terrorism in Nigeria, according to him, “Without your prayers, probably it will have been worse than this.” In essence, Boko Haram victims should stop whining, it could have been worse if not for prayers?

Since prayer is the master key, the government should erase the 1 trillion naira for security agencies in the 2014 budget. Let’s budget prayers instead. Prayer is necessary, but whatever happened to applying conscious efforts?
